90 Degree Heat Precautions

Living in the Southern Tier of New York or Northeast Pennsylvania, blacktop will get pliable. As homeowners or business owners we need to make sure that we don’t allow sharp objects on our driveways. Sharp objects can damage our driveways by piercing the blacktop. If damage to the asphalt happens the blacktop will not last as long and will need to be repaired.

Examples of items that could damage blacktop; especially in 90-degree weather, are

Motorcycle Kickstands

Aggressive Breaking

Zero Turn Mowers

Parked Vehicles

Vehicles that are being parked on the blacktop for an extended period of time, like recreational vehicles, boats and campers and pull behind trailers.

Let’s talk about each one of these in more detail.

Motorcycles

If you own a motorcycle or a family member does, the kickstand can damage the blacktop by causing a hole where the kickstand is. If you have a motorcycle, please make sure not to park it on your blacktop during hot weather.

Aggressive Braking

If you or someone in your family is aggressive about braking, aggressive braking can damage your blacktop when the weather is over 90 degrees by ruining the section you brake on. You will see the tire marks / wheel turns in the blacktop.

Aggressive braking can tear up the blacktop. This can be a larger area, from the start to the finish of braking, that could be affected. Please slow down on blacktop when it is hot out or possibly stay off the blacktop so there is no risk.

Zero-Turn Mowers

If you own a zero-turn lawn mower when going out to mow your lawn and you drive over your blacktop when it’s over 90 degrees out it, this can damage a section of your driveway from the lawnmower tire turns tearing up your blacktop.

Parked Vehicles

A recreational vehicle, due to the sheer size of it, can sink into blacktop, the damaged area could be the size of your recreational vehicle. Please safely move it to your lawn until the temperature gets cooler to keep the blacktop from needing to be repaired. Also, if you own campers, boats, or pull-behind trailers, all these recreational vehicles can sink into the blacktop if it is over 90 degrees outside. Move recreational vehicles to your lawn until the temperatures are cooler to keep your blacktop safe.
