How Does Snow Affect Your Driveway?

Like it or not when winter hits there is a good chance (depending on where you live) that you will have to deal with snow. That snow can be hazardous to drive in and can cause damage to buildings, trees and other items. But what does snow mean for your driveway, parking lot or sidewalk?

If you did all the work to maintain your driveway during the warmer seasons hopefully it will make it easier for you to take care of your surfaces in the winter. Hopefully you made sure you kept your asphalt sealed, removed any large stones or even smaller pebbles and dealt with any holes or dips.

The big issue during winter is the thaw cycle. Although it might seem like it is freezing every day during the winter, that is not always the case. When the snow and ice accumulates if you have not dealt with your surface cracks they can get worse as the snow and ice enters those cracks and thaws and then it gets cold again and that water expands.

Hopefully you were vigilant about spotting and removing any oils on your driveway during warmer months because once those mix with the snow and ice they can enter your surfaces and damage them.

Here are a couple of quick tips for maintaining your driveway or walkway in the winter:

B

Ever been shoveling and you can’t tell when your asphalt stops and your yard starts? Before winter hits consider adding tall stakes to mark these areas so that you don’t damage your yard while removing the snow and ice.

B

Make sure your shovel or snow blower doesn’t have any damage – for example no chips or cracks in the area where it meets your surface. Issues like this can damage, scratch or scrape your driveway or walkway.

Winters can be harsh on lots of things. Do your best to stay warm and healthy and take care of your property safely and properly. Don’t forget to take breaks when removing snow and know your limits.
