The Best Way To Remove Stains From Your Asphalt
Summer and Autumn seem to be when we typically find stains on our asphalt driveways. This is partly because of the heat and cars leaking fluids or from leaves putting marks on the surfaces. So, what is the best way to clean your asphalt driveway? Well, that depends on a lot of factors.
The best thing to do is identify the stain. Is it oil, gas, or an environmental factor?
The first thing you should do is try to use water to remove the stain. Ideally you will start with a hose and lightly try to remove the stain but occasionally that is not enough. Before you break out the pressure washer make sure there is no loose gravel or cracks around the area you are going to spray. Spraying in an area like this can damage your driveway.
If pressure washing alone doesn’t work or is not an option next try a household cleaner. Dish soap is great for oil based stains but other soaps and even diluted vinegar can sometimes do the trick. Try to use a bristled brush if possible, rinse and repeat as needed.
If there is a large amount of oil or liquid in an area you may have to try to absorb it. Sometimes a non-clump cat litter or sawdust can be used to soak up the stain causing item. You may have to let the product sit overnight (so make sure there is no rain in the forecast). The next day sweep up the absorbing material and then try cleaning using the steps above.
No matter what way you decided to take care of your stain make sure you do it carefully to avoid damaging your asphalt. Also, don’t forget that the best offense is a good defense so remember to sealcoat when needed to make cleaning up stains easier.
