Can I Repair My Asphalt Driveway Myself?

Is your driveway looking a little rough but still in really good shape? Are you a DYI homeowner that is wondering if you can take care of your driveway issues yourself? The good news is that a lot of smaller problems with your driveway are issues that you can tackle yourself. However, it is important to note when the repairs are beyond your capabilities and you need to contact a professional.

Potholes

A pothole is where a chunk of your driveway at least 1/2” deep is missing. You might only have one or you might have many potholes. These types of issues are possibly repairable on your own depending on your ability to get the equipment needed to repair them. Specifically you would need an asphalt tamper or vibratory plate compactor. There are asphalt patch products available, some hot some cold. Note that cold asphalt patch will not hold up as long as hot ones. This is not a quick and easy fix and if you are planning on attempting it yourself make sure you do the proper research and that you are getting the correct information.

Alligator Cracks

If you have tiny cracks that look like a spider web or a bunch of tiny cracks in square shapes in your asphalt you are looking at alligator cracks. To repair these issues you will need alligator patch material, sealcoating sealer and an asphalt brush or squeegee. This is easily a do-it-yourself repair that can sometimes be accomplished over a weekend. Make sure you find the proper information you need and that you are using the proper materials for your driveway. It is important when doing this repair that you allow enough time for it to fully dry, so make sure you have an alternative location to park your vehicle while doing this repair.

If you are unsure if you can truly do your driveway repair yourself contact a professional and see if they can help you out.
